Chico, CA ParkerStore Outlaw Sprint Kart driver Kyle Larson won a feature event for
the third week in a row as Cycleland Speedway held point race number five. Larson raced to
his second consecutive win in the 500cc Open Intermediate division after coming from tenth
starting. In the 500cc Open division Larson led the first seven laps of the A-Main before
dropping from the race with a broken exhaust pipe.
Larson qualified his ParkerStore/Grandpa George Motors/QRC Factory K art
eighth of the 35 karts in the Open division. He led every lap of heat two and earned the
outside front row starting spot for the 20 lap feature race. He assumed the lead from the
start as 2005 Chico Silver Dollar Speedway and Golden State Challenge Series Sprint Car
Champion Sean Becker fell into second from fourth starting. The duo easily began to pull
away from the rest of the pack, with Larson maintaining a four to five kart cushion. Just
as a red flag appeared on lap seven for a multi kart tangle on the backstretch
Larsons exhaust pipe broke open with a gaping hole, eliminating him from the race
and allowing Becker to inherit the lead. Becker was able to carry the QRC house kart to a
convincing win as Larson was scored 14th of the 22 starters. Even with the misfortune
Larson was able to maintain his point lead in the division.
Larso n
timed in fourth of 35 entries in the Open Intermediate division. He started third in the
six kart eight lap trophy dash but at the conclusion of the first lap his left rear tire
came off the bead of the rim and Larson dropped from the event. With the result Larson was
relegated to tenth on the A-Main grid. Alissa Geving led the first three laps from the
pole, but spun in turn two on lap four, giving Josh Keheley the top spot. While Larson
restarted in eight, fourth running Tyler Taylor got into the back of third place Mason
Moore and caused a chain reaction that collected the cars between Moore and Larson. After
restarting fourth on lap four Larson held the spot through lap seven. On lap eight Larson
powered around both second running Moore and third place Camron Mendes with a high side
move in turns one and two. Jus t
after getting into second the yellow appeared and Larson was poised for the opportunity to
take the point from Keheley. As the green reappeared Keheley went high into turn one as
Larson dove to the bottom of the high speed racetrack. Larson was able to complete the
pass as he drifted up in front of Keheley and took over the lead that he would extend over
the final 11 laps, earning his third feature win of the season at Cycleland.
At the end of the night Larson said Alls well that ends well, I guess. This
was one of those nights where it seemed like nothing was going to go right. Maybe it was
the full moon. First, we found the motor mount was broken after qualifying and had to
thrash to replace it. We just made it for the heat race in the Opens. Then after the flat
in the trophy dash and the broken exhaust pipe in the Open main while leading, I wondered
what would go wrong in the Open Intermediate main. But things broke my way and I was able
to get the win and keep both point leads. Next week Im going to have my fingers
crossed as Keith Bloom Jr. is going to sub drive for me as I will be driving Clarence
Reddicks midget for the first time at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, Arizona.
Im really excited and looking forward to racing the midget but I will definitely
have an interest in what is going on here.
