LARSON OPENS RED BLUFF INDOOR SEASON WITH SIXTH
Red Bluff, CA ParkerStore Outlaw Sprint Kart Driver Kyle Larson began the Red Bluff
Winter Indoor Series campaign Saturday inside the Pauline Davis Pavilion at the Tehama
County Fairgrounds with a sixth place finish in the 500cc Open Intermediate main event.
Larson had to come from the back of the feature race as a spin in his heat race sent the
13 year old Elk Grove, California driver to the B-Main event.
Larson qualified his ParkerStore/Grandpa George Motors/QRC Factory Kart second with an
8.687 of the24 karts on hand, while Dillon Silverman set fast time at 8.672. Larson
started fourth in the second heat on a rapidly drying race track and raced into third on
the opening lap as Andrew Cumpton led over Mackena Bell. On lap six fourth running Garrett
Mills tapped Larson from behind in turn one and sent him for a lazy spin, bringing out the
yellow flag. Larson restarted and came back to finish sixth, as Cumpton went on to get the
win.
Larson started the trophy dash fifth in the six kart six lap event and finished there as
Mills captured the win from the outside front row slot. The B-Main found Larson on the
pole with Jake Park outside him. At the drop of the green Park assumed the lead and led
every lap except the last over Larson. Racing out of turn four to the checkered Park found
himself behind a couple of lapped karts that veered into his path. As he took evasive
action into the infield Larson streaked by to get the win, while Park recovered to finish
fourth, behind Michael Forslund and Matthew Davis, and transfer to the A-Main.
Larson lined up tenth in the 13 kart A-Main and moved into ninth on the first lap. On lap
seven he got by Bell and on lap 12 he passed both Brad Patchen and Robert Marcos to take
over sixth. The remainder of the race saw very little passing on the dry slick surface as
the top six never changed to the checkered. Mills led all 25 laps and assumed the early
point lead as Larsons sixth in the feature put him sixth in the point standings.
After the races Larson commented, I wish we could have started the Red Bluff season
with a better racetrack, but with the playday we had on Thursday night I think it makes it
kind of a guessing game to prepare the track just two days later. Also, it was pretty warm
outside with a breeze blowing through the building. After qualifying the track really
slowed down and it was just about impossible to pass on top. Getting spun out of a
transfer spot in the heat race made for a hold your breathe B-Main because anything can
happen here with lapped karts. I was just fortunate to not get caught up in the incident
Jake Park was involved in coming to the checkered. He was really lucky to get the last
transfer into the feature. In the feature we got the kart to hook up better but there just
wasnt anything you could do with the track. Everybody was just following each other
and about the only way we could get by was if someone made a mistake. But things could
have been worse for me today and I feel fortunate to be sixth in points. Well come
back next week and try to get a win on, hopefully, a hookem up track that everybody
loves here.
