LARSON BACK IN WINNERS CIRCLE AT CYCLELAND SPEEDWAY
Chico, CA Rebounding from the disappointment of not winning either feature, after
appearing on his way to victories, at the last race at Cycleland Speedway ParkerStore
outlaw sprint kart driver Kyle Larson won in the Intermediate 125/250 division Saturday
September 17th. He also finished second in the 500cc Open Intermediate main after repairs
were needed after a trophy dash shunt that damaged his front end.
Larson set fast time over 29 competitors in the 125/250 division and started last in the
six kart six lap dash. Larson moved his ParkerStore/Predator Motors/QRC Factory kart up to
a second place finish behind Colby Copeland and earned the sixth starting slot on the
A-main grid. Larson advanced into fourth on the first lap behind leader Mason Moore,
Dillon Silverman and Alissa Geving. On lap 2 Geving raced by Silverman into second and
Larson got by on lap five. Silverman fought back and retook third from Larson and held him
at bay until Larson passed once again on lap 14. As Larson moved into third Moore was
finding it difficult to negotiate the heavy lapped traffic ahead and Geving and Larson
soon closed the gap. Larson passed Geving on lap 16 and quickly closed on Moore and made
the winning pass on lap 17. A caution flag necessitated a final two lap dash to the
checkered but Larson was able to hang on and capture win number 14 at Cycleland this
season.
In the 30 kart 500cc Open Intermediate division Larson qualified second behind James
Sweeney and started fifth in the dash. On lap one Larson powered by Brian Southers and
Keith Bloom to move into third behind leader Silverman and second place Copeland. Coming
out of turn four on lap five Larson and Copeland were side by side when each caught a rut
causing both karts to quickly veer at each other and contact front wheels. Larson pulled
to a stop in turn one with a damaged right front spindle and broken rod end and was towed
to the pits while Silverman went on to win. Larsons team completed repairs in time
to start his ParkerStore/Grandpa George Motors/QRC Factory Kart tenth in the 20 lap
A-main. By lap two he had jumped into seventh and on lap three was running fifth. On lap
seven Larson moved into fourth and trailed leader Bloom, Moore and Brian Southers. On lap
12 Southers sped past Moore into second and so did Larson on the next lap. Lap 14 saw
Larson get by Southers but he was not able to chase down Bloom, whos victory
unofficially narrowed the ParkerStore drivers point lead to one over the Anderson,
California driver with two point races to go.
At the end of the nights activities Larson commented This was one of the most
challenging tracks Ive ever seen here at Cycleland. There wasnt much of a
cushion around the top until the main event in the open intermediates so the bottom was
the fast way around early, but it was really rough, especially in turn four. In the
125/250 race I got into fourth early but with the bottom so rough I just couldnt get
by Silverman and I thought I had no chance to win. But when I finally did get by I could
see Mason was having trouble with traffic. I caught him really quick and got by and it
just seemed to happen so fast. I really needed to get a win in that kart because I
hadnt won here since July and Masons been nibbling away at my point lead. He
missed the dash tonight so we were able to get quite a few more points than him and I
should have about a 60 point lead. But Keith Bloom is really making it close in the 500
kart and I think Mason is still only about 30 points out also. The contact in the dash
with Colby was about a 10 point swing but it wasnt anybodys fault. It was just
hard racing on a very rough track. And really, to come from 10th on this track to finish
second in the main, Im pretty satisfied. Also, I do want to give a big thank you to
Robert Carrel from QRC www.qrckarts.com for
providing me with the Yamaha 250 engine weve been using all season. He just had it
rebuilt again and it was really hitting hard. That thing is so reliable and it is all due
to Robert and his support.
