LARSON GOES NON STOP TO WIN AT CYCLELAND
Chico, CA ParkerStore Outlaw Sprint Kart driver Kyle Larson added to his point lead
in the Intermediate 125/250cc division at Cycleland Speedway Saturday night July 23rd as
he won his sixth A-main of the season. He was not so fortunate in the 500cc Open
Intermediate division as a late race spin relegated the hotshoe to a 12th place finish.
Larsons time of 11.541 was 6th fast in the 125/250 division out of the 34 karts on
hand, earning the pole for the six kart eight lap dash. The ParkerStore/Predator
Motors/QRC Factory Kart assumed control of the race from the start and won by a wide
margin. Larson then started fifth in the A-main and he was up to third by lap four. Colby
Copeland, utilizing a 250cc engine for the first time, led from the start while Larson
passed second place Thomas Bruckenstein on lap nine. As the race continued non stop
Copeland and Larson separated themselves from the rest of the field. Larson soon reeled in
Copeland and the pair was lapping karts at will in a nose to tail battle. Coming out of
turn four on lap 15 Tyler Reddick began to do a lazy slide and when he overcorrected
Copeland was there. Contact ensued just as Larson approached and he was hit by Copeland.
All three were able to continue and Larson squirted out with the lead. The race continued
caution free to the finish with Larson completing the 20 laps in less than four minutes.
Mason Moore got by Copeland on lap sixteen to solidify his second place standing in the
points.
In the 500cc Open Intermediate division Larson was second fast time with an 11.205 in a
field of 31. He started fifth in the dash and drove to a third place finish behind winner
Dillon Silverman and Moore. Larson started seventh in the feature race and used a couple
of deft moves on the opening lap to move into third. Front row starters Josh Keheley and
Camron Mendes swapped the lead back and forth during the first five laps with Larson right
behind. After the yellow appeared for a trio of karts that were spun in turn two Keheley
approached the area and turned down and contacted Larson, sending him spinning into the
others. Larson restarted 19th as Moore went from third to take over the lead on lap six.
The ParkerStore/Grandpa George powered kart advanced to seventh by lap 14 but Larson got
into the slick middle groove in turn two of the last lap and allowed his kart to spin. As
Moore went on to win Larson was scored 12th in the final results and saw some of his point
lead shrink over third place finisher Keith Bloom.
As the night of racing ended Larson commented Boy that sure was a fun race in the
125/250 main. I dont think I have ever been in a non-stop main event. Colby and I
were really going at it through all the lapped traffic and it was really fun. In the 500
kart it was just an unfortunate incident with Josh that put me to the rear. He didnt
mean to do it and he felt bad about it. It just made me drive hard to get a good finish.
But then I made the mistake on the last lap and gave back a few spots. Sometimes
thats the way racing is and you just have to live with it and move on. But
well be back at Cycleland next week and I really need to get a couple of good
finishes because Im going to miss the next race and need a couple of substitute
drivers to help me keep my point leads. We are going to head back to the Knoxville Outlaw
Dirt Kart Nationals a week early and head over to Eldora to see the Outlaws and the
$50,000 to win non wing sprint car race there. I have never been to Eldora before and I am
really looking forward to seeing it as I hope to race there some day.
