LARSON BACK ON TRACK AT CYCLELAND
Chico, CA ParkerStore outlaw sprint kart driver Kyle Larson got back into victory
lane in the 500cc Open Intermediate division at Cycleland Speedway Saturday night July
16th. He rebounded from a last lap spin in the division last week and increased his point
lead over runnerup Keith Bloom. In the Intermediate 125/250cc division misfortune appeared
as the second place kart of RJ Johnson spun in front of Larson early in that feature race,
sending the ParkerStore mount to the rear before salvaging a sixth place finish.
Larson set fast time in the 125/250 division over a 33 kart field with an 11.493 and
started sixth in the six kart eight lap trophy dash. He caught race long leader Jake
Cartwright as the white flag appeared and took the win. Larson started sixth and carried
his ParkerStore/Predator Motors/QRC Factory Kart up to second at a lap four yellow. On the
restart Larson jumped the turn one cushion and slapped the wall. He recovered but Johnson
had gone by to claim second. Entering turn three Johnson allowed his kart to spin and
collected Larson, relegating him to the back of the pack. He was able to fight his way
back to sixth at the checkered and salvage a decent finish as Thomas Bruckenstein claimed
his second win in a row.
In the 500cc Open Intermediate division Larson qualified third with an 11.122 out of the
27 karts pitted. He finished third in the trophy dash and the finish gave him the seventh
spot on the grid for the main event. Mason Moore took the lead from polesitter James
Sweeney on the first lap before a yellow appeared for Kyle Johnson. On the restart Sweeney
got into the back of Moore and the duo spun, also collecting third running Camron Mendes.
Colby Copeland assumed the top spot with Larson in second. On lap 7 Larson carried his
Grandpa George powered mount by Copeland and proceeded to open a large lead over the rest
of the field. He continued to set a torrid pace to the lap 20 checkered and he collected
his fifth Open Intermediate win at Cycleland this season.
Larson commented at the conclusion of the nights event, It feels good to get
another win with the open kart tonight after spinning at the end of last weeks race.
The track was really fast on the cushion tonight but it was pretty rough. I almost lost it
coming out of turn four with about three laps to go but got it back just in time. I really
think I would have gotten the 125/250 win also but going to the back after RJ spun was too
much to overcome. With all the traffic I had to deal with I guess sixth is a pretty good
finish.
