LARSON WINS IN DOUBLE DIPPER AT CYCLELAND
Chico, CA ParkerStore Outlaw Kart Driver Kyle Larson got back into the victory
column last weekend with a win in the Intermediate 125/250cc division as the All Star Tour
made up a rained out race at Cycleland Speedway on Friday June 10th. He also came home
with an 11th place finish in the 500cc Open division before returning the next night to
Cycleland where he earned two top five finishes in the regular point show presented there.
For the All Star Tour race Larson set fast time in the intermediates with an 11.819 over a
29 kart field. He started on the pole of the eight lap heat race and led every lap to
advance to the Garth Moore Insurance and Financial Services Dash for Cash that would set
the first three rows of the A-Main. Larson drew the third starting pill and finished
second to outside pole starter Mason Moore. For the feature Larson lined up his
ParkerStore/Predator Motors/QRC Factory Kart outside of Moore and got the jump at the
green flag. That move basically decided the race as Larson was able to lead every lap to
win his second All Star Tour event in a row and extend his point lead over Moore to 29.
In the Open Division Larson qualified fifth fast of the 47 karts assembled and started
outside the front row next to fast timer Tyler McCain in the first heat. McCain got the
advantage on the start while Larson held second the entire distance. The finish placed
Larson fifth in the feature lineup and by lap four Larson lost that spot to Alec Kerns. A
lap six restart saw Daniel Becker get into Larson in turn one and spin both competitors.
The yellow ParkerStore/Grandpa George Motors/QRC Factory Kart restarted at the tail of the
22 kart field and began an impressive charge that saw Larson guide his mount through heavy
traffic and get an 11th place finish in the final rundown. Pistol Pete Johnston won his
second of three All Star Tour events to extend his point lead while Larson fell one spot
to third, behind Keith Bloom.
The next night saw Larson return for another point race at Cycleland Speedway and he again
set fast time in the Intermediate 125/250cc division with an 11.507 over 31 karts. Larson
started the fully inverted dash in sixth and finished third. He lined up seventh for the
A-Main and at the start found himself locked in a tough battle with several karts that
eventually saw him get shuffled back to eighth by lap 14. Over the last six laps Larson
was able to fight his way to a fifth place finish as Moore captured an exciting last turn
victory, after starting the final lap in third.
Larson qualified sixth in the Open Intermediate division and started the trophy dash from
the pole. Zack West took the lead at the start before Larson did a lazy spin in turn one
on lap two while running second. He restarted sixth and came back to fourth at the
checkered and the finish put Larson eight in the A-Main lineup. He made a close quarters
move into turn one at the start and emerged down the back straight in fourth. On lap three
leader Moore had his left rear tire deflate moving Larson into third behind Kyle Johnson
and Brian Southers. On lap eight Southers snatched the lead from Johnson as the trio
negotiated through heavy lapped traffic. Larson finally got by Johnson on lap 17 and began
reeling Southers in. Coming to the checkered Southers bobbled in turn four and Larson
contacted Southers back bumper, causing both to nearly spin. Both regained control
of their machines and Southers won by a kart length.
At the end of the weekend Larson said, Overall it was a pretty good weekend. I got
the win Friday in the All Star Tour race and that is important to me because the All Star
Tour Championship is always what I want to win most. Im a little disappointed about
having to restart at the back of the Open main but I ended up having the fourth fastest
lap of the race and really had to drive hard to get back to 11th, so that feels good. On
Saturday in the Intermediate main I just couldnt seem to get going. The top groove
when away and I seemed to be boxed in a lot fighting for space on the bottom. But if I can
get top fives every week, like I did, then the points will come. The Open Intermediate
main was really fun when Kyle Johnson, Brian Southers and me were battling through all
that traffic. The track started to take rubber by that time and we were really flying
around there. I thought Brian was going to lose it there in the last turn and take us both
out but Im just glad he saved it and Ill take second this time.
