Kyle Larson emerged as the champion of the series with his
fourth place finish last night on the red-dirt quarter-mile at Placerville. At age 18 - Larson
became the youngest champion in the history of the series - which dates back to 1986 when Steve
Kent won the first "King of California" title. Larson was
praised universally in the pits as a kid that is mature beyond his years. Richard Brown,
who is a veteran mechanic, and currently works as crew chief on Evan Suggs' #33
said that Larson reminds him of a young Kasey Kahne. Others see
a comparison in driving ability at the same age to Donny Schatz. Either way - Larson
is being viewed on scale with two great racers. Larson joins the list of Golden
State Challenge champions that includes Kent, Brent Kaeding, Tim Green, Randy Hannagan,
Ronnie Day, Tim Kaeding, Jason Statler, Sean Becker, Jon Allard & Tyler
Walker. If you are scoring at home - that is a pretty short list for 25 years of racing.

As we have done in the past - we'll take a shot at naming 15 drivers that we think have a legit
chance to make the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals Saturday A-Main for the first time in their
careers. Keep in mind there are 266 entries for the event - so the pool of possible first-time
show makers is deep. In my brainstorm of ALL the drivers I felt could do it - I came up with 39
names. Dwindling that down to 15 was tough -
Kyle Larson - It's no secret I admire the 17 year-old Larson's
skills. Last year he jumped into a car for the ailing Jerry Higbie moments before his heat race.
Larson had no hot laps and he was not given passing points due to the late swap - but he still
performed well enough to put his car in the A-Main on his preliminary night. Larson took home a
Golden Driller in the Tulsa Shootout's Outlaw Kart division last week and now it's time for him to
further convince folks on the National stage that he is one of the best overall driving prospects
to come along in years.

Larson amazed me again. In his first run without a wing in a sprint car - he was running
in the top five solidly on both nights. The cushion in turn two bit him Saturday night - costing
him a better finish. Sunday he was victim of a crash in front of him and a slide job into him.
This was one case where the box score lied. If you just looked at Larson's finishes (12th, and
17th) - you would have no idea how good the 17 year-old looked.

There were alot of people in the stands both sat. night and sun. nite who saw a kid race for the
first time without a wing and were very impressed. The kid has got talent and to run your first
race wingless at the fastest track u compete on and really put it on the guys who do it week end
and week out. He impressed alot of very knowledgeable people who were sitting in front and back of
me ( car owners). Its too bad that Marcel wasn't there to see it.

..Kyle Larson just keeps getting better. He finished fourth in the Saturday feature in the
Vertullo #83v. The 16 year-old told HammerDown! he would really like to run the entire Golden
State Challenge tour in 2009 but he needs a steady 410 ride with spare parts to be able to do so.
If one could buy stock in Larson it would be a great investment. We are notorious for hyping young
racers in this web space but I'm telling you with all my heart and all with all my thousands of
races watched - that Kyle Larson is the real deal. Someone needs to offer him a development deal
before the opportunity passes by.
Yeah that is a great article. Kyle deserves it though because he drove one
hell of a race. What is the plan for next year?

smooth and smart driver what I can see. I agree with you on the team is no where near a high $$
operation. But what ever they are doing for this kid deserves an applaud. They were the only team
to believe in this kid, to give this kid a chance at the age of 14. I can remember last year, his
first year, people complaining he was racing a sprint car and he had no business out there . The
Vertullos were the ones to give Brad Sweet and Chuck Gurney Jr their start also. And you are
right, someone with high $$ needs to snatch him while they can. Love to see what he can do in top
equipment.

...And what a nice run by 16 year old Kyle Larson! He qualified 10th, won
his heat going away and was handily out running several Outlaws deep into the A main, including
Donny Schatz. The two time WoO champion who was running right behind him was showing no signs of
being able to pass him until he caught the same rut TK hit high in turn 4, causing him to spin.
This kid has impressed me several times this year. His team is nowhere near a high dollar
operation but they provide him good equipment, setups and seem to be the perfect mentors to kick
off his Sprint Car career. One of these high dollar teams need to snatch this kid up while they
can. He's more then just a gasser, this kid is special!

83v car and 3 of them are in the Civil War series, the toughest series out there, 35-40 plus cars
at each race. Sure would love to see you get more seat time in the 410 and run Golden State

I made the trip to Calistoga instead and enjoyed watching Kyle Larson for my
1st time on the 1/2 mile. On a follow the leader track he was the one making the moves. Went from
19th to 6th in the A main. Also got to see him make his BCRA midget debut at P*Ville and he was
very impressive. 10th to 5th in his heat and 14th to 6th in the feature. It was pretty cool
watching his rookie ribbons streaming behind him while he diced through the field. You are all
going to get a kick out of this kid.

Take it from an old RACER.
You can never learn too much about reading the track before you go out to race, and adjusting your
car to fit you and the track. Also learn all you can about Chassis adjustments to fit you and the
track. Please don't forget the most important thing from time you enter the track to the time you
leave the track is to get the CHECKED FLAG. If you don't, you have done nothing except get a
little seat time.

Now that the season is over and we look forward to the upcoming year, what are some of your

Kyle Larson's first win, August 4th @
Placerville. Larson made amazing progress, and did so in a very short amount of time. In his first
race, Larson couldn't get out of his own way, looked timid and was involved in multiple wrecks.
Within a matter of a few months, he was running towards the front, and more importantly, drove
like he belonged there. When Larson makes it to the big time in a few years, I'll be glad to say I
saw him win his first sprint car race.

Actually the funny story is one of my friends was talking about this young gun who at 15 just won
his first main event in the states, naturally my ears pricked up and i tuned in, i asked who this
was and he said oh i think his name was Larson or something he said he just quickly read thru
hoseheads and saw it while looking for Aussie drivers results, and I was like oh my stars thats
Kyle.. and sure enough i got on the computer and had an email from
you and discovered that my lil champion did it..
Well done Kyle I'm so proud of you for achieving something that many people take a life time to
master and achieve..

Civil War race. Do you know this is the toughest series out here in California and you won it!
It's not like running Marysville, Petaluma, Antioch, Placerville regular 360 point races. Ask
anybody who knows about 360 sprint cars, Civil War is tough. As you can see 9 different winners in

You raced like a veteran, you showed patience
until the track came to you then you schooled them when the time was right. Running the bottom
like you did showed a lot of finesse and then to smoke em up on the top was definately a crowd
pleaser. Congratulations to everyone who stood behind this operation because they believed in you.
You knew what you were doing from lap one, that was amazing. I enjoyed all of the people coming up
to me and saying " YOU'RE RIGHT AGAIN FEED". They don't really realize that I grew up
racing against some of the best, I have seen it happen. Kyle, I would put my money on you against
any one of them.
Dave and Debbie- you should be very proud car owners, to step out of the box and give this kid a
chance when he has never even been in a sprint car shows a lot of class. A lot of people missed
the boat on this one, you have set the standard of what racing is all about.
Promoters- you should also be proud today, California needs to keep some of its raw talents here
instead of them having to move out of state. can you say "TICKET SALES"

| I don’t think you guys realize how much
that meant to Ryan; he was so excited to stand next to Kyle and get a trophy that was signed. I
looked over in his chair on the way home and we all lost it when we saw him asleep with the trophy
on top of him. It was an emotional night also with his first win…. You guys are class act and

You know as I was watching Kyle on Sat and said
to myself that I think he is one of the best drivers I have seen in a long time! I must have said
that all summer also. You know I have been racing for a long time and Kyle impresses me the same
way that most of the great drivers have from the past. I am sure you have already either done this
or thought of it but maybe you should talk to Sills about doing his midget program at the school,
I went to Sills one year just to get additional training even after 2 years racing sprint cars, it
may also open up other doors for you. I know of a midget ride that could be rented, his name is
Chris Walker, don't know if he is still renting the car out but that is a possibility for next
year. He owns Bay Muffler in Mtn View and it may good to start talking to him now you never know
what can happen. Chris is always looking for new talent.

Awesome, we all were watching from up above.
You set him up beautiful and were gone, you can tell that everyone was amassed on how smooth and
fast you are. You beat them with your right foot, you were the only one feathering the throttle.
If you’re going 50mph you want the tire to spin @ 55mph, everyone else was going 30mph and
the tire spinning @ 80mph.

Hey buddy, my name is Jory Holbrook from Atlanta GA. Just was looking at your web site and wanted
to give you some praise for you efforts. I have raced dirt and asphalt karts for the past twenty
years here in north Ga. The only problem around here is we do not have dirt sprint karts, it is
either a shifter for asphalt or a briggs for dirt. I also wish we had some USAC events out here.
Anyway I wont take anymore of your time, I hope I get to meet you one day and share some
stories....

I got the shirt and DVD, on Thursday, last
week. I wore the shirt to a high school football game in Sibley Ia.(northwest corner, 250 miles
form English Creek!) and had a high school girl holler at me from the grandstands: KYLE LARSON
ROCKS!. Now, I never got a chance to talk to her, as to how she knew about Kyle, but obviously, it
had to have been from English Creek, somehow. hehehehe
I also wore the shirt to the Jerry Richert Memorial race in Somerset Wisconsin on Saturday night,
which is 250 miles from Spirit lake, and probably 475, miles from English Creek. I had a guy come
up to me and ask where in the heck I got that shirt at. As I was telling him that you sent it to
me, I recognized him as Eric Becker, a winged outlaw kart driver from Wisconsin who raced last
year at English Creek during the nationals. I had received an email from him last year, and sent
him a CD of all of the pictures I took. It was kind of wierd, having those two things happen,
wearing Kyles shirt.

Just had to send a message to tell you what a
nice experience we had meeting Kyle and his family. My wife (Sheila) and myself went to the WoO
race in Bakersfield last weekend and had the pleasure of sitting in front
of the Larson family. Thru the night we talked and enjoyed spending the evening with them. I was
sorry to find out that I missed some of the best racing at the Knoxville Nationals last year by
skipping the kart race just down the street. Congratulations on securing such a fine young driver
for your team and thank you for your support and involvement in Kyle's karting . Best of luck to
both of your drivers although we hope that Donny finishes one spot behind Jason Meyers. Such was
not the case Friday night at Manzanita. We will certainly be attending one of Kyle's kart races
